Day 01: Cusco | Upis | Arapa Pass | Hatun Pucacocha

We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and we will go in our private transport for 3 hours to the starting point of our trek in the small town of Upis. There you will enjoy our first breakfast
Then we will start the walk gradually for 3 hours to the place where we will have lunch. During this part of the tour we will be able to observe the Majestic snowy peak known as Ausangate in the long distance, our team will be waiting for you at our first stop with a delicious lunch. You will have time to enjoy a short break and recharge your batteries.

After lunch, we will start a two-hour uphill hike to the Arapa Pass (4,800m/15,748ft). Then we will descend for three and a half hours to the Hatun Pucacocha lagoon, where our camp is located. On the way, we will also appreciate Lake Yanacocha. Once in the camp, you can help yourself to a hot chocolate or a coffee, and a little later dinner will be ready.

Today our trek will begin after breakfast with a two-hour climb to the Puca Pass (4,870 m / 15,978 ft). Along the way, you will be able to observe an amazing eroded mountain, beautiful high Andean valleys and you will also witness the beauty of several glacial lagoons, such as Huchuy Pucacocha and Hatun Pucacocha.

A little later, we will descend for an hour and a half to Anantapata, our lunch spot, to enjoy another delicious meal and then ascend for two hours to Warmisaya Pass (4,985m/16,355ft). From here you will be able to appreciate from a new angle the sacred mountain of Ausangate and the Rainbow Mountain, as well as the endless Vilcanota mountain range.

Then we will descend for 1 hour to Surinecocha, where our camp is located. When we arrive, you will be greeted with a hot drink to warm you up. Its impressive display of colors is due to the sedimentary layers of minerals that were exposed by erosion. After enjoying the rainbow mountain for about an hour. What do I need to bring to the Ausangate and Rainbow Mountain trek?

  • We recommend that you take only what is necessary to enjoy your tour and leave the rest of your things at the hotel in Cusco.
  • The original passport.
  • A small 50 liter backpack that allows you to introduce all the things you will take with you
  • A sleeping bag preferably at least 5 to 10 degrees below zero, this can be synthetic or feather, if you do not have one you can rent it from our office.
  • Appropriate clothing for walking, waterproof and comfortable shoes for long walks, shorts and long pants, sports shirts.
  • Warm clothes to be used in the camp (We recommend cotton clothes that are very comfortable to sleep in, a hat and gloves for the cold. What is the best time to do the excursion?

Peru is a very large country with many different climates, for that reason it would be very difficult to define a good time to visit different places. However, we consider that the best season is from April to November. For the Salkantay Trek, the hottest season is from December to March, but it is also the rainy season. That is why we think that it is more pleasant to do a sunny but cold excursion than a warm but rainy excursion. For this reason, we recommend doing it preferably between May and December. It should be noted that the Ausangate Trek is open every day of the year except in February, the month of maintenance and heavy rain.

How many days of acclimatization do I need before starting Ausangate and Rainbow Mountain Trek?
