It is the last Inca bridge, preserved to this day thanks to the inhabitants of the nearby communities. Every year it needs more than 800 people, a lot of Peruvian feather grass (Ichu) and 4 days to be renewed. If you want to visit this 600+ year old Inca legend, join this full day trip to see one of the best places in Cusco.

Take the chance to cross the 30 meter long bridge and balance over the Apurimac River. If you travel in June, meet the people of the communities who are working hard to demolish the old bridge and put up the new one. This show, declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, is accompanied by ancestral rituals and a great celebration. In addition to that, you will visit the famous 4 Lagoons.

Day 01
Cusco – Cusipata – Combapata – Quehue – Q’eswachaca bridge – Four lagoons

You will start this trip leaving Cusco around 5 am to travel around 3 hours to the remote province of Canas. Half way you will make a stop in Cusipata for breakfast, after breakfast we will take a short drive to Q’eswachaca.

Once you’re on this impressive bridge, you’ll be able to balance there as you connect with this amazing piece of history, your guide will tell you about it. Qeswa is a Quechua word that translated means “braid”, and Chaka refers to “bridge”. It is 30 meters long and is made of ropes woven by hand with Peruvian feather grass, a type of straw. Every year the 4 neighboring communities come together to weave the straw, tear down the old bridge and build the new one with basic tools and a lot of strength. This tradition has been kept alive for hundreds of years.

You will find yourself more than 15 meters above the Apurimac River as you cross the bridge from one end to the other. You’ll also have great views of the canyon, so capture this moment on camera. If you are there in June, you will be able to see the construction of this marvel of engineering and witness the annual ceremony dedicated to Mother Earth and a festival full of typical dances of the region.

After that, you will enjoy a boxed lunch near the bridge and take one last look at this fascinating place. The return trip is through the 4 Lagoons, making several stops to see the Pomacanchi, Ancascocha, Pampamarca and Acopia lagoons, these lagoons provide fish to the local inhabitants.
