MACHUPICCHU ON THE HIRAM BINGHAM LUXURY TRAIN
Day 01
Cusco | Poroy | Ollantaytambo | Aguas Calientes | Machu Picchu | cusco

After breakfast at your hotel in Cusco, our guide will take you on a 20-minute drive to the Poroy station in our private transportation. Upon arrival at the train station you will enjoy a glass of champagne during a welcome show with typical dances of the area and wait in the exclusive waiting room before boarding the train.

Admire Belmond Hiram Bingham’s 1920s-style narrow gauge carriages decorated in blue and gold. Once on board, make your way through the gleaming brass and polished wood interior to find your elegantly upholstered seat.

During the 3-hour ascent to Aguas Calientes from the closest station to Machu Picchu, you’ll be able to explore the train’s observation deck, bar car, and two dining cars, where you’ll enjoy a 3-course lunch. Pair your meal with Peruvian, Argentinian, and Chilean wines, among other drinks, such as Cusqueña beer and pisco sour. Food will not be the only thing that makes this train journey something special. Enjoy all this while the musicians play traditional Peruvian songs with guitars and percussion cajons. From the observation deck, you will be able to enjoy the impressive panoramic views of the Andean landscape, with its majestic overlapping slopes, green hills and wide valleys along the Urubamba River. When you arrive at the Aguas Calientes station, you and your guide will board a bus specially reserved for Hiram Bingham passengers. You will appreciate it when you see the crowd of people waiting for the collective transport.

The bus will head up the road and shortly arrive at Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas, situated on top of a mountain 7,000 feet (2,134 meters) above sea level. Stroll through the cloud-shrouded archaeological site as your guide leads you through the main streets and ceremonial temples of this ancient city, admire the sun watch l and its delicately carved staircases.

Figure out how the Incas designed this small town to be self-sufficient, including terraced crops to feed its residents irrigated by natural springs.

After the guided tour, take a walk around the citadel on your own and then head to Belmond Sanctuary Lodge for an afternoon tea. Enjoy scones and sandwiches with tea or coffee or sample snacks and choose from a selection of wines.

Then, together with your guide, you will take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes and settle into your seat aboard the Hiram Bingham. In the evening, head to the dining car for your 4-course gourmet dinner. You may want to join the musicians singing and dancing on the return trip back to Cuzco. Upon reaching the end of the train journey, board our private transport to drive you back to your hotel in Cusco.
