The ancient archaeological site of Sillustani is one of the most spectacular ruins in the Puno region. Sillustani, once a burial ground for pre-Inca cultures, and later for the Incas themselves, Sillustani is home to impressive tower-like structures called chullpas, which served as tombs for people of noble birth or high rank. Come with us as we explore the amazing Sillustani Tombs, which also have amazing views of the beautiful Lake Umayo.
Our excursion starts in the morning after your breakfast. When we pick you up at your hotel in Puno. From here, it’s a 45-minute drive to the incredible royal tombs at Sillustani. When we arrive you will have plenty to explore Sillustani with your knowledgeable guide. You will see all the amazing chullpas, which show contrasting pre-Columbian architectural styles from civilizations such as Pucara, Tiahuanaco, Ccolla and the Incas. Made of stones weighing up to six tons, many of which are perfectly aligned with each other, these burial towers are very impressive. Sillustani’s largest tower took around 50 years to complete. There are more than 90 structures in total, some small and some very large. The mummified bodies were buried inside the funerary towers and placed in the fetal position along with various possessions that would accompany them to the afterlife. The small entrances to the towers were aligned towards sunrise, helping the spirits of the deceased to travel towards the Sun God. During the trip, we will also see the waru warus, the Aymara term for an agricultural technique developed by pre-Hispanic peoples in the Andes. These consist of parallel canals placed between raised planting beds, which were strategically built in alluvial plains near a water source so that the fields could be properly irrigated. We will also see the typical structures built by rural farmers today, including their small houses and pens for llamas, alpacas and sheep. After fully exploring Sillustani and enjoying the incredible views, we will return to Puno. We should arrive around noon, at which time we will drop you off at your hotel.
